CONTENT WARNINGS: forced scenarios, altered mood, illness, disaster aftermath, kidnapping, interrogation & torture, violence.

▶ 001. FLOWER VIEWING.

The Neo Tokyo Meteorological Agency is very excited to report that cherry blossom season has begun, and the cherry blossom (and plum blossom) trees are blooming right on schedule once again. It’s a rare time where the concrete jungle of Neo Tokyo blossoms in beautiful shades of pink and white, and due to past conservation efforts to protect the natural cherry blossom trees, there are natural trees in season all over the city. It’s a sight to behold, and the people are very excited about it, setting up picnic mats and enjoying the beauty of nature with their friends and family. Even with all the distractions of technology, even with the looming knowledge that the next Kaiju could advance at any second, Hanami continues to be a popular custom, still being practiced centuries after the world was first at siege.

Outsiders are free to do as they like during this period. Some of the city still needs to be rebuilt from the recent floods, but stall owners have organized themselves splendidly to capitalize on the season. Traditional foods and snacks to enjoy with your loved ones at Hanami include dango, cherry blossom cookies, sakura mochi, onigiri, and hanami bento sets including sushi rolls, kamaboko and tamagoyaki. Prepare your own, or grab one at the many stalls offering them on their menu. Lots of places are selling sake at half off.

For Outsiders who want to do more than sit at the picnic, they can break up fights between the locals over the best picnic spots (they are very intense about this), or help track when the trees are blooming throughout the city and report directly to the Neo Tokyo Meteorological Agency. They’re happy to pay. If Outsiders choose to report where trees are blooming, they will accept a small form on their ocular devices and encouraged to walk in a pair or group for accuracy when gathering information. The form will include date, location, the kinds of trees blooming and how well they are blooming. (Players are free to head canon any information about this.)

Those who stay too long amongst the flowers might find themselves coming down with an … interesting form of hay fever. Symptoms can include flu-like symptoms, or uncontrollable giggling and elation. Looks like the flood waters from before are affecting the trees in some way.

▶ 002. WHITE DAY.

Here in Neo Tokyo, LILITH wants all its Outsiders to be happy and bonded as a team. A team that cannot work together will crumble in the next Kaiju attack. While it’s a great sentiment, the organization is a little too fond of … coercive methods. Just as chocolate was provided last month for Valentine’s Day, Outsiders will be airdropped several boxes of chocolates on March 14th, also known as White Day. A brief is beamed to their implant:

█ █ █ MISSION OBJECTIVE:
✖ Return the chocolate previously handed out to you on Valentines’ Day.
✖ For new Outsiders and Outsiders with leftover boxes, hand them all out to other Outsiders by the end of the day.
✖ Failure to comply will be grounds for disciplinary action.

Just as before, a failure to comply with these requirements will result in Outsiders being saddled with cleaning duty of the cafeteria and communal showers for a week, or a house arrest of 24 hours in their rooms.

As a note, we are leaving it up to players to decide how many boxes they are saddled with and how much they need to do to avoid punishment.

▶ 003. BUDDY UP.

With new Outsiders arriving at the base, LILITH wants them to feel as welcome as possible. Older Outsiders will be tasked to take a newbie under their wing and buddy up with them for a number of days (to a few weeks). The newbie, meanwhile, will be ordered to shadow a more experienced Outsider throughout that whole time to learn as much as possible about life as a LILITH recruit. LILITH expects the oldbies to act as a true senpai, but will ultimately leave it up to them to decide how best to nurture the new arrivals. A Shutterstock image will appear in the implants along with suggestions. Some suggestions provided by the LILITH Outsider Management Committee include:

✖ Giving them a tour of the base and city.
✖ Training sessions in fighting, use of weaponry and use of technology.
✖ Welcome parties and dinners to make them feel included.
✖ Shadowing the older arrival throughout their daily routine.
✖ Heart to heart sharing sessions about their worries and anxieties.
✖ Physical and mental health check ins.
✖ Buddying up with them during upcoming missions, simulation training and even the Kaiju fight.

These team ups will be assigned by LILITH randomly, and one newbie can be buddied up with multiple older recruits (the system might glitch on occasion and pair older Outsiders together too). How long the pair ups last is up to player discretion. Non-compliance on the part of older or newer Outsiders will be punished with increased cleaning duties. LILITH hopes to foster a culture of mutual growth and support within its employees!

As for recruits who have not been getting along, old and new, LILITH has been hearing everything spoken between Outsiders. Some need exercises to get along. Outsiders will be asked one morning to meet in the Simulation Arena and line up in an orderly fashion. Captain Yamakawa will be going down the line, shuffling characters who need to get along together. She will place a small, metal device on their wrists.

With a push of a button, two characters will be linked together by the wrist by a pair of invisible handcuffs. They are asked to spend between 24 - 48 hours together and go about their day, encouraged to talk about their vulnerabilities or things they have in common. This is to encourage them to get along.

✖ Spend a day or two with someone you hate and find a common ground. Good luck!

▶ 004. AID & REBUILD.

LILITH is dedicated to protecting and flourishing the city of Neo Tokyo. That’s why it’s pulled in Outsiders with such a wide array of skill sets. Every Kaiju attack devastates the citizens in some way - whether it’s through physical hurt and pain, emotional grief and stress, or losing a home or livelihood. It doesn’t help that there was panic around animal hybrids being let loose in the city shortly after. That’s why Outsiders will receive a similar objective each time: Rebuild the city of Neo Tokyo. This general objective is broken down into many small missions that Outsiders will receive throughout the month.

█ █ █ ASSORTED MISSIONS:
✖ REBUILD THE CITY. Following the repeated flooding, many apartments and businesses have been destroyed. Outsiders are tasked with helping to rebuild homes and support the local businesses to recover. This can include aiding the construction work (particularly along the beach and near to the coast) and helping out at local shops. Many shops selling specialty Hanami treats are looking for help making their goods. Never made sakura mochi before? Today, you will learn. Outsiders are free to assume that their workplaces were affected and call out for help.
✖ AID THE PEOPLE. Outsiders with skill sets in healthcare or healing (or whoever wishes to help) will be tasked to support the clinics and hospitals manage their patient load. This can include cooking for hospital kitchens, changing linen and caring for the sick and wounded.
✖ CLEAN UP. Exactly as it says on the tin. Clean up any marine waste that’s been washed onto the shore or rubble that’s fallen in the wrong place. Hazmat suits in outrageous colours are provided on request.
✖ CAPTURE REMAINING HYBRIDS. Though most of LILITH’s specimens have been contained, Dr. Spim (who’s been saddled with inventory work) reports that there are some still missing - and this includes their most valuable specimen of all. Outsiders are tasked to go hunting for these hybrids and bringing them back to the base. They may need to scour the streets or look through social media to find them. They may also need to steal a beloved pet, if said pet looks more like a winged rabbit than a regular rabbit. (Outsiders who have smuggled hybrids for themselves should take care not to be found ❤)

▶ 005. LEVEL 000.

Later during the month, some Outsiders will be tasked with a very specific mission. Remember those auctioneers who were captured at The Sapphire Room? They’re currently in the custody of LILITH, and with most of LILITH’s staff focused on organizing and containing the hybrid specimens that have been captured as well, they are far too bogged down to conduct their usual interrogation processes. This is where the Outsiders come in. Some Outsiders will receive a special mission to interrogate the captives and retrieve information by any means necessary. It works out splendidly too, because it shows the organization just what their imported workforce is … morally capable of. Outsiders will be paired up and brought to LEVEL 000, a basement level within the main base that is restricted access only. Did we always have a basement level? Best not to think about it.

A guiding drone will lead them to the cell room and instruct them to keep their eyes forward. There’s no need to look at the other cells around you. There is no one of interest there. Within the cell is one of the captives from the raid, who’s bound to a chair by metal shackles.

█ █ █ MISSION OBJECTIVE:
✖ Extort information from the captive by any means necessary. LILITH requires information about the whereabouts of Dr. Tanaka Junichiro, the organization behind the kidnapping, how they managed to trip up LILITH’s systems, and information about the whereabouts of the remaining hybrids (including their most valuable specimen).
✖ Outsiders are permitted to use any method they see fit, including physical and psychological torture. Weapons of torture such as blades, pliers, tasers, whips and torches are available for use. Outsiders may not take any weapon with them when they leave the cell.

Following the interrogation, they will be escorted out of LEVEL 000 by the guiding drone, and they will not be able to access it again without special clearance. Successful extortion of information will be rewarded with 50,000 KRYPTO debited to their accounts.

NOTE: This mission will be shared with only certain Outsiders, so it is essentially opt-in. Players who want to receive interrogation clues about the Starlight X mini-plot can comment below and receive an RNG clue. We will leave it up to players to NPC their own captives. Most of them are small-time gang members looking to make an extra buck or mercenaries hired to guard the auction. For extra moral panic, there are one or two regular people down on their luck who ran into the wrong crowd. Please note that due to the limited number of captives and the information they may know, players may receive duplicate clues.

UPDATE 3/16: Players will have until the end of March to submit for interrogation clues.

Please specify what method your character used to interrogate the captives. Note that simply pleading with them is not enough to get them to speak. Mods will let you know if it is not likely that your character's interrogation method will work and you may change it once.

Method: How did your character interrogate the captive? Be as descriptive as possible.

Method: This is basically Kiritsugu's wheelhouse, and oh my god he is not unwilling to be shitty and problematic here. That said, he knows torture isn't always the most effective method, so he'll probably start off with presenting the suspect with evidence and giving them a chance to confess off the bat. If that doesn't prove effective, it'll escalate into some light waterboarding and/or shooting them in non-vital regions.

1. Hanami, Hanayou

[ the blossoms are beautiful, and unlike anything malkuth has ever seen.

one would think that she'd take the time to stop and smell them, then. that she'd set out at dawn one of the days to find a good spot to camp before anyone else arrived to fight her for it. that she'd maybe invite a friend or two, and they could all have lunch together.

...

one would not know malkuth then, who's heard she can give the city a hand by tracking the blooming trees while enjoying the sights that way and get paid for it. her hobby of trying new hobbies is surprisingly expensive!!! she's not wasting this chance!!!

to that end!

a. be her partner
malkuth isn't shy about hooking someone along, especially since it's encouraged for accuracy's sake, so walk around with her... she's happy to spit a fun fact or two about trees -- evidently, taking it quite seriously to the point she'd looked into the local flora and its storied history of conservation efforts, of why they celebrate it, so on and so forth.

she knows a lot. please don't make fun of her. this is her enrichment.

b. stop her from working
this girl... is always on the move. this was true in every life she lived, and even if malkuth knows better now than to push herself-- this isn't pushing herself! but she's most certainly out every day hanami's going on to help track the progessing blossoms, since it's a great way to kill two birds with one stone!

she does want to try the local food. so she'll be munching on some goodies while she walks every now and then, particularly dango and sakura mochi. but aren't such things better tasting when sat beneath the blossoms? ]

3. Face the Past, Rebuild the City

[ it's a great chance to see the sea, helping out with construction by the beach, and... wow. ]

It really does look bad out there.

[ ishmael hadn't been kidding. the breeze is fine, and there's hazmat suits in the distance to help clean what they can't touch, but malkuth hadn't thought her first sight of the sea in any form would be... like this.

but there's something to learn from it, too. not just the disaster, but from the people she helps -- how to make different delicacies, the infrastucture used in buildings going forward to keep them more sound during possible future storms and floodings, the hope that comes from rebuilding a life bit by bit, board by board, stone by stone. it's nice. it's good.

at some point malkuth might take a much needed break from the construction work she's been aiding at least, dusted and bruised from repeated stumbles and accidents, but she's quite focused on sketching in a notebook instead. ]

4. anything else?

[ anything else!!! buddy up, she's. technically still new even if she stepped in before apps opened, so an older wing would be welcome... malkuth has been doing well but she won't say no to extra guidance. or if not that, not anything of these, then whatever works! if you'd like to hmu for something, PMing her journal or messaging me sundrymunity works just as well!! ]

I. CHOCOLATES

[ It's a good thing she has no inkling of the implications of giving chocolate out to others — Valentines Day and White Day are certainly Not a Thing™ to githyanki. So, in her mind, this is just about sharing food, or sweets rather. That's what these smell like, anyway.

If you happen to cross her path, she'll be pretty adamant about handing them off to you, enough to block your path as she holds a box out, expectantly — if you're really not paying attention, the box might end up pressed against your chest. ]

Take this. [ She says it with pressure, looking you dead in the eye so that there can be no mistaking that she is talking to you. ] If you know what is good for you.

[ she's not getting punished because someone didn't want some damn sweets... she'll tie the box to them if she has to. ]

II. BUDDY UP

[ Are you (un)lucky enough to get paired with Lae'zel as your newbie buddy?? Well, you might be in for a surprise, because she doesn't immediately bite your head off at the idea of being paired together and forced to spend a day together (not until the handcuffs get involved, see below). Githyanki like her are collectivists; independent as she is, she doesn't believe in being a loner, nor does she believe these threats and this planet's struggles can be solved by any band of single actors.

The more accurate term to describe her attitude going in to being paired up is begrudgingly going along. Once everyone's dismissed with their new buddies, and the two of you start on your way around the base, she pipes up quickly — because if there's anything she hates, it's wasting time. ]

Obviously, this is meant to close gaps in our understandings as swiftly as possible. [ Her arms fold, and her gaze is piercing as she sizes you up, clearing trying to see how tough you are, or if you belong in Weenie Hut Junior's. ] Is your "daily routine" so educational?

[ It's a little snide, sure, but she could've refused to cooperate entirely? This is basically being friendly, to her??? She'll walk by your side, dutifully following to wherever you tend to start your day. Or, wherever you plan to lead her because you feel like it; she won't know any better. ]

III. GET ALONG SHIRT

[ Lbr, she doesn't get along with anyone, so anyone is prone to getting chained to her for a day or two. Sorry. And she will not be happy about it. Her scowl is deep as she tests the give and tautness of the invisible chain, likely yanking your wrist along with hers as she does so. ]

I will not be sharing my vulnerabilities with you. [ yeah ] I suggest you do the same, k'chakhi.

[ Because it's just plain a bad idea to speak your weaknesses out loud. Plus, where's the fun in the person telling you right out? ]

IV. SAKURA MOCHI

[ You know how they have those hammers for wacking the mochi with when they're making it... well, you and Lae'zel have been assigned to doing that. One of you will be using the hammer, and the other will be kneading the mochi as it gets wacked.

She makes direct eye contact with you, then reaches for the hammer. Better be quick if you don't want to be the one dodging her bringing the mallet down! ]

[ Getting to ~~torture~~ interrogate someone for information?? Finally, some good food around here. :/

No, but this is definitely the type of mission she doesn't mind getting handed. If anything, she might've just gained a little more respect for LILITH for doing things the efficient way: quick and brutal. Plus, they were smart enough to ask her here. Her approval for them just went up a tiny bit — they even paired her with one of the few that hasn't fallen short of her expectations completely.

The only annoying part is that they have to be chained together, which severely limits their movement, and her opinion, weakens their intimidation factor. Even so, she walks in stride with him easily as the drone leads them down to the cell, dutifully keeping her eyes forward as instructed — a glance towards her will show that it is done out of respect, not out of fear or deference towards their superiors.]

We should be done with this swiftly. [ She huffs, trying to impart on him that she is taking this seriously, and isn't looking to get personal pleasure out of dragging this all out. Like anything else, this is just a job to her. ] If you get the sense he does not know anything, we need not waste our time.

[Makima’s enjoying the downtime, or what’s mostly downtime aside from helping to break the occasional fight. She’ll enjoy the discounted sake, and seems pretty interested in the tree tracking. It’s not something she’d normally volunteer with, but it sounds pleasant enough and she likes the idea of partnering or grouping with others for it.

Or there’s the chance to catch her after, giggling which is a far cry from her normal demeanor. Probably an unusual sight to see her overcome with laughter, who knows if or when she’ll be like this again?]

[003 - A]

[Aside from flower viewing, she’s also very interested in mentoring some of the newbies. She knows it’s the kind of attention some would probably kill for back home, but she won’t make a big deal about it. It’s not about her after all, it’s about helping people acclimate to their new situation and all of that. Honestly whether she’s matched with someone old or new doesn’t really matter...though if it is someone who’s been here, she does acknowledge that it’s a little silly being assigned someone who’s been here just as long as she has. Still, she’s sure there’s something to be learned from this experience, so she won’t find that discouraging.]

[Of course there’s also a few people who she’s not necessarily on the best terms with. Though things like that are usually one-sided and she can’t help that. Still, these rare cases might result in a summons to the Arena and being cuffed together. Being around Makima for the duration is also probably something else people would fight over back home, but probably not under these circumstances.]

It looks like we’re stuck…

[No matter who of those unlucky few she’s stuck with, she’ll offer the same comment, stating the obvious. There’s no real energy behind that statement either, she doesn’t sound or look like she has any particularly strong feelings about this situation.]

[She’ll also be helping with the rebuilding efforts too! It’s very possible to catch Makima making mochi but her interest is mostly going to lie with tracking down the hybrids. So she can be found out in the streets, following sightings she’s seen posted. Teaming up for this is fine, she won’t frown on another pair of eyes to help her look.

So far she’s mostly sticking to ones that have been spotted in the wild, so to speak. There’s been a few sightings of ones kept as pets and while she’s not opposed to dealing with them, they don’t seem to be her focus at the moment.]

so what happens if we somehow kill the captives during interrogation? is there a punishment or...?

a. flower viewing

[ He'd heard about it in passing, of course — when they had visited Kyoto, in fact. When he had the chance to chat up some locals while sight-seeing, they had told him he ought to visit again in spring, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and naive as he was, he had told them he would. Why wouldn't he? So eager to discover and experience as many new things as he could, it would be a privilege to witness such delicate and ephemeral blossoms, a symbol of springtime, the season of rebirth.

That was one of many experiences he expected he would never have. Had made his peace with the fact, though it hurt. (It still hurts.) That he has the chance to see them now, in a place unfamiliar and yet so like the one he had come to cherish so dearly...it's a rare, lovely thing, one that he never should have known. There's a lot of those these days, aren't there?

So caught up in the splendor, he loads up on goodies and some of that half-price sake, definitely spending way more than he should, and it's not until he's got his spread laid out on a blanket that he realizes he...might have overdone it. Well then! He'll just need some assistance.

Waving down the nearest Outsider as they pass: ]

Hey! If you're not headed some place else, would you like to join me for some snacks and sake? It's still warm.

[ His eyes are bright and gentle, but there's something morose in his tone, the sound of a winter's passing. ]

[ His time has come...

That's to say, while Ryoji has thus far accepted every mission LILITH has assigned him without question, this is one he approaches with particular gusto, despite the fact that he has been saddled with enough boxes of chocolate that he needs to carry a basket to hold them all. The basket is even heart-shaped!

Without delay, Ryoji seeks out other Outsiders at every corner of the base, from the cafeteria, to the greenhouse, to even the locker room, looking for familiar and new faces alike to hand out his chocolates to.

As he hands over a piece of chocolate, with a genial and charming smile: ]

Pardon me, if you have a moment...would you like one of mine? Careful, they melt quickly — but not as quick as your eyes melt my heart.

[ The thing is, he is being so deadass sincere right now. You'll take one, won't you? ]

c. level 000

[ The affair with the stolen hybrids and Dr. Tanaka has left a sour taste in his mouth ever since they were first tasked with retrieving them from the black market, though he's set aside his personal feelings to do what LILITH asks of him. He owes them a debt, which leaves him with myriad conflicting emotions, but for his own selfish wishes, he will repay them with doing what is asked of him.

...Including interrogating their captives. There's an unfamiliar, distinctly uncomfortable feeling in his stomach, but he doesn't know what it is, so he shoves it down and focuses on the objective ahead. As he descends to level 000 with his assigned companion, he grasps his hands behind his back, stony-faced and quiet. He doesn't...like when he has to be like this.

As they reach the door where the captive awaits them just beyond, he dips his gaze, head bowed, as if trying to cut through the clutter in his mind before they enter. ]

...Sorry. This isn't the sort of work I really enjoy. [ A mirthless chuckle, a beat. ] We should discuss our methods, before entering.

a. sake-tasting
[ it's incredible, how the city seems to have transformed overnight. the streets are lined with pink and white foliage, a beautiful sight that ishmael isn't used to after seeing the worst of the City she came from.

but she's not here to dwell on that. today she will actually take her well-deserved break from... everything that happened at the beginning of the month, really. starting with -- ]

a. ( There was something bittersweet about the whole affair. Even in a place such as this, Kiritsugu hadn't any hopes to see a friendly face from his world-- yet alone his own wife, knowing full well her sordid fate at the conclusion of the Holy Grail War. But the miracle happened, and she'd returned to his side.

Hanami, in specific, was something Kiritsugu had long wanted Irisviel to experience. The region of Germany where the Einzberns resided had been frozen in time, literally and figuratively, in a perpetual state of winter. He always thought she deserved more than the sort of life he could afford her, often thinking to himself he should have run away with her and Illya while they still had a chance, and take her somewhere she could flourish.

Now, he lies on a picnic blanket beside a basket packed with homemade food, bottle of sake in hand, donning a powder blue kimono. Anyone is free to approach him, be it while he naps underneath the cherry trees, or while he entertains his wife. )

[Raidou has decided to take the Meteorological Agency up on their offer of cataloging trees, since it's a nice excuse to see more trees, visit more picnic sights and spend some more time outside walking around. Thanks to his style chip, he's dressed for the occasion as well.

Since they've been encouraged to go in groups or pairs, hopefully you've decided to join him in a little flower viewing disguised as research. Not that Raidou is normally chatty, but as the walk goes on, he seems quieter than normal, hand on his his forehead. Is this a fever coming on...? He's feeling a little strange. It's a long walk back to base, but maybe it's time to go.]

He'd already been reaching out to new recruits, offering answers to questions or tours of the city to whoever might want one. Those who do are treated to very factual answers, and pragmatic location scouting as opposed to a light sightseeing tour. This kid seems like has a hard time turning off Business Mode.

Now is no different. The newbie assigned to him today can find him in Everlight #012, and he answers his dorm door with a bow in greeting. Business Formal Mode. at least you won't have to worry about getting handcuffed to this guy.]

[Outside the nearby shrine, at the bottom of the stairs, Raidou and his fellow workers there are handing out meals to the civilians who need them. When you pass by, there is quite a line, and Raidou is behind some of the tables putting the meals together into boxes. Care to help?]

[Minato didn't have a lot of money yet, considering he was new, so he didn't really go ham on the festival. But he did find a way to simply rent a plain yukata for cheap, a dark blue with some stylized waves.

He saw the spread in front of Ryoji and sighed softly with an amused smile barely visible. The cherry and plum blossom viewing wasn't hurting only Ryoji today. He sat down with the taller teen and picked up one of the colorful dango.]

his interest lies in the multitude of sweets and snacks available for purchase throughout the festivities. unfortunately, he has a Dilemma™. it looks like he has spent all of his credits, so what is a man to do with an insatiable sweet tooth, an empty stomach and zero kryptos to his name?

that's right — he does his due diligence and attempts to charm his way into acquiring some free samples. a silver tongue, a little charm and a handsome face goes a long way...? ~~or maybe it's just the sheer shamelessness.~~ he can be found chattering, flirting and laughing up a storm with various stall owners.

the man is on a Mission entirely of his own making. but hey! he is experiencing more success than failure, so good for him? but maybe someone should really get him to stop. or they can judge him. or they can join him in the fun(?) and make it into a competition.

once gojo has had his fill of dango and cookies and mochi though, he somehow ends up tagging along with some fellow outsiders to track down which trees are blossoming. it's less out of goodwill than it is for the promise of actually earning some kryptos. (no one can say he hasn't tried to earn his keep yet!) of course, how actually helpful he is... well, it's debatable. it's just so boring, y'know? ]

Does the whole form need to be filled out? [ he isn't even looking at the trees right now; he's smiling at two locals going at it over a picnic spot in the distance. ] Can't we just lie and get this over with quickly? [ it hasn't even been 15 minutes yet. ]

he tugs a bit, ultimately pulling on makima's arm as well. they can't 'see' the handcuffs, but it's there. they can both feel it somehow. a blink, he then stares down at their wrists, almost certain it's only secured around that area alone. ]

[ It's White Day!

He had given Raidou a present on Valentine's Day, but it hadn't been special; it had been a friend style chocolate, like the ones he might have had from the girls in middle school. It didn't have that same meaning, and now a month later... Yuji wants to give him something a little bit different. Something that has some meaning to it, some message, especially since White Day is meant to be for the boys.

It's special, and it makes him want to put the effort in.

Hours after making the decision, Yuji had been forced to contend with the fact that he might not be that good at buying gifts for someone he really cares about, and had ended up attempting to make some homemade chocolates, despite his lack of experience later. A burned finger and a few disasters later, and he's wandering around trying to find Raidou, a little band aid on one finger and a small box in his hand.

When he spots the other boy, it's like the sun itself has exploded inside of him as he brightens, waving. ]

Yup! You might think that putting everything higher up would help, but in reality that just makes things worse. I've been doing some experiments with the sand.

[ flip... a little diagram of the experiment. piece of wood stuck in sand, -> ocean rolls over it (note: I didn't get close, I promise!) -> wood tilts at an angle ]

There's a sort of... suction? That happens when the two meet, and as the ocean pulls back the sand comes with it, which ends up with our stilts on an angle. They need to be firmly put into the ground, with reinforcements for the walls a little higher than the danger goes, and a base that won't give way to water erosion too quickly either. People hundreds, thousands of years ago learned this stuff the hard way so we wouldn't have to! Isn't that cool? We're still being shaped and kept safe by the very innovations people have been using for as long as buildings have stood!
