Could be something like that, yeah... Me n' him, we don't exactly have any crazy powers to lean back on outside of our mobile suits... I mean, we're good at fighting. Damn good, cuz we're Coordinators, and that means we're at as peak performance as a human being can get. But beyond that, it's not like we have magic or heat breath or anything.
What he does have over most other Outsiders is strategic thinking. [Y'know. In his (biased) opinion.] He is a Commander... The chess angle would play to his leadership skills.

It might well be his moral obligation to spill the beans in order to keep the others safe and increase their odds of victory. He just hopes the mech hasn't also grown up to it's original 60 feet in height, the same way Godzilla got hyper-sized down here...]
