It's something back where I'm from.
To be honest, there's still a lot about them we don't know but think of them as unknown disasters.
They appear suddenly without warning, bringing chaos where every they show up.
If you go inside, everything is messed up and there are a ton of monsters.
Staying in a Hollow for too long can result in all sorts of nasty side effects too.
I guess the big difference from what I can tell is monsters can come out of rifts but monsters can't come out of hollows.
...
At least, not yet.
