DOWNTIME MINGLE #8
DOWNTIME MINGLE #8
▶ 001. WINNER'S CIRCLE
In light of everyone's recent help with both the ocean exploration and the clinical trials, the Outsiders will return one day to a surprisingly well-decorated area within the mess hall at the Kyoto base. It's been adorned with some of the flowers that have wildly bloomed on the outskirts of the city in various areas, as well as those that the researchers had been personally working on fostering in the LILITH greenhouses. Beneath it will be not a pizza party for once, and charcuterie and other donated food items will be there for Outsiders to enjoy. There is even some recognizable cuisine from Egypt for them as well!
While Neo Tokyo has always been noted as being a city of technology (even with their dwindling resources), a new trend of collecting swords has sparked in the city. Maybe they've seen it in certain Outsiders, but the idea of both collecting swords, displaying them, or even holding exhibitions for them have become more common. Some have even taken to hunting for them in the wild.
If any Outsiders are interested, there appears to be several posts online in which they think older blades may be laying in sleep. But, as with most rumors, there's no guarantee it isn't a wild goose chase.
On TV, the new spring line up is out. A new live action series featuring a group of friends who fight kaiju using mecha has made its debut. Their mecha are animal themed and can combine to create a super mecha. The new lead is a hot headed female character with a lion mecha, which spawns a line of action figures in stores across the city. The lion mecha is the most popular and often resold online for inflated prices. Maybe an Outsider can get their hands on one without paying the scalping fee?
Oftentimes when it comes to the Outsiders and the general masses, there's a distinct disconnect. Which is why it all seems to hinge on rumors and hearsay. Who knows where the information stems from, but they heard a certain Outsider has a liking for bread. There will be no shortage of bread sponsorships for the base, though... some may be far more experimental. However, some claim lab-grown bread may actually be tastier? Only one way to put it to the test. The lab-grown bread conveniently also comes in cans.
GOOD JOB:Thanks to the Outsiders’ hard work, they are met with positive reception by the general public, which seems to have grown astronomically since the past two missions. This has only grown from their recent success abroad. Per usual, there are a few oddities that have caught on in the city.

▶ 002. FROM SUMER WITH LOVE.
Around the same time, a few LILITH employees show signs of a common cold – nothing noteworthy at first really, if only out-of-season. But then the disease starts spreading at an alarming rate within the headquarters, its symptoms evolving from a mere cold to a severe life-threatening flu. Preliminary analysis reveals the disease to be unlike any known on this planet – perhaps this is why no medicines work. Symptoms include chest pain, trouble breathing, nausea, excessive vomiting and diarrhea, chills and high fever.
To make matters worse, news from LILITH locations around the world reveal all known bases to be afflicted by the same mysterious epidemic, only affecting LILITH staff and not Outsiders at this time. This cannot be a coincidence: LILITH is under attack.. but how is something like this possible?
As researchers race to try and understand the disease, LILITH will request everyone to quarantine themselves on base for the safety of the public. Gradually, the disease spreads across the base only for tests to reveal: the Outsiders are left unaffected.
As the month progresses, more and more of LILITH’s employees find themselves bedridden with the deadly disease until by the 30th of May, only Outsiders are left standing and healthy; all the LILITH crew has been affected. The civilian population outside the base is safe for now, but for how long? Unless something is done, it is estimated all humans working for LILITH will be dead by late June.

Seok Dang tried to stay on the line, but all that was heard was gut-wretching vomiting, to which SYNTHIA promptly cuts his connection. Sorry about that.
It is up to the Outsiders to find the source of the disease and resolve the crisis before all hope is lost. Is this somehow related to those Outsiders who recently disappeared? Wait, aren’t there a few Outsiders here who have seen this flu before and can recognize it…?

"Greetings, my children. Worry not. I come here to report some concerning news: both Captain Yamakawa and Commander Shiro have fallen gravely ill. Since I am an A.I assistant, my health is optimal. Seok Dang has also fallen ill, though he is still in denial of it. I will do my best to take care of each and every one of— "
"BULLSHIT!! This is nothing! I've had hangovers worse than this, you hear me? Calm your terabyte-tits, bitch. I'm here. There ain't nothin' that is gonna stop me, in fact, with the higher ups feelin' like shit, that would put me in command, right? W-Wait, hold that thought, I.. feel like I'm gonna throw up."

▶ 003. LIVIN' LA VIDA LOCKDOWN.
While everyone is quarantined on base, they are encouraged to communicate with each other through the network. During this time, they can do research, share ideas, and try to figure out what is happening as the disease spreads across base and around the world.
While they are in lock down, LILITH encourages the Outsiders to pick up some new hobbies and interests to keep themselves active. They will have access to various workout videos. Some of the videos are hosted by cyborg coaches that expect Outsiders to do things with their bodies that probably aren't physically possible. Other Outsiders might get simple ovens and jars of suspicious "starters" to bake. Of course, there are other hobbies like growing miniature artificial plants, board games, virtual reality games, and more to keep them interested while they're trapped inside!
After about a week, when it becomes obvious the Outsiders are unaffected, they will be allowed to leave their rooms and roam freely to assist. LILITH does not understand why they are not affected but they are depending on the Outsiders for help now more than ever.
Though they are free to wander and seem to be immune for the time being, LILITH warns if they experience any cold-like symptoms, they should report their status and quarantine immediately.

▶ 004. AFTERWORD + SPECIAL NOTE.
Welcome to May's downtime mingle! All tags on this log are worth 2 points.
The June Event is a player plot that is going to differ from regular events in a few ways: Outsiders have to find the location for the next Kaiju fight on their own using hints given in the From Sumer With Love prompt, and correlating them with the past and ongoing disappearance of various Outsiders. They can use LILITH’s equipment to look for anomalies across the globe, however there is not enough time to scan or contact every region in the world. Outsiders need to guess where the anomaly likely is before they can get confirmation. There is a PLOTTING post for this event over here.
Furthermore, they will have to reach this destination through their own means as there is no LILITH staff left to fly them there. Vehicles can be requisitioned, but will have to be flown by Outsiders on their own. This also means Outsiders are free to stay behind at the base if they prefer, as nobody will force them to go. Pain-relieving medicines can also be developed if the true nature of the disease is found and the appropriate characters work on it, though nothing short of defeating the anomaly will solve this crisis and save everyone.
Last but not least: this event will have two Kaiju battles, one on each log as well as many different challenges the Outsiders will have to solve on their own if they want to save LILITH and bring home their missing friends! Please use this thread to ask questions and offer your proposals as to what the Outsiders should do (location guessing, transport, etc). Proposals made in this thread will affect the first and second prompts of the first log.

EVENT BREAKDOWN/RECAP (CLICK TO EXPAND)
1. WINNER'S CIRCLE: The heavy hitters/KO winners of the last kaiju fight receive their sponsorships and inspire new trends, including an interest in collecting swords, a new live action series (like Power Rangers), and free bread.
2. FROM SUMER WITH LOVE: A mysterious disease spreads across LILITH's bases. The symptoms are like the common cold/flu but much more severe. There is currently no cure. Outsiders seem to be immune to the disease. After quarantining, they are encouraged to investigate and come up with plans for the battle to come.
3. LIVIN' LA VIDA LOCKDOWN: While on lockdown, Outsiders are encouraged to try some new hobbies. They can also communicate through the network and do research to uncover additional clues and come up with more plans.

Yeah? And what if you just happen to have a rift open up under you in that span of five minutes or less? What if you're taken, and we can't figure this thing out to get to you in time? I'm just supposed to live with the consequences of that decision for the rest of my life!?
no subject
No, because if that happened, you wouldn't have the rest of your life to lament any consequences! Don't you see what you're implying when you say that!? Not just about the missing, but about the rest of us here!
no subject
[He kind of snaps. And he hates that he does. He hates admitting that he's scared about anything, he hates admitting to any lack of faith in the team, and he KNOWS he's being selfish. He hates all of it! But Yzak is just too precious to him to take ANY kind of risk on.]
no subject
Of course you are, you idiot! You think I don't feel that way about the idea of being some kind of walking target that could be dragged who the hell knows where!? Again?
[ The reminders of which still cover his entire body. He stands now, not because he's going anywhere, but because when he's sitting and looking up at Dearka, he feels small and this whole situation is already making him feel like he's being seen that way. ]
But the worst case scenario isn't going to happen! Use your head a little instead of letting fear control it! If people are going missing because of Ereshkigal, that means she's not dead in there. And if she's specifically not targeting us with this illness, that means she doesn't want us to die. Why would that be any different for those she's taken!?
no subject
[He says it quietly, his expression deadly serious, fists clenching and unclenching anxiously at his sides as he stares meaningfully into Yzak's eyes. Did he already forget? They LITERALLY just got done talking about the possibility of people being mutated or driven to insanity from rift exposure. Dying isn't necessarily the worst case scenario anymore.]
I couldn't do anything to stop what happened in Transylvania. If you really are a target of this thing, you have to let me do everything that I possibly can, or else what the hell good am I as a partner?
no subject
But I'm not going around looking for any of that! And I wasn't in Transylvania, either. So stop acting like there was something you could do back then when nobody was able to stop it! You figured it out and you bailed me out when I needed it in the end, anyway. And I sure as hell hope you had faith that I was capable enough to hold out and do what I could from my end until then!
[ He keeps his gaze steady with Dearka's, but sees the way his hands are opening and closing stressfully. ]
I'm not complaining that you want to help. I took this silly little firefly and I'm fine with you being here. Obviously! I want to be cautious because I'm not an idiot so I'm not treating this lightly! I just can't stand it when you give me that ... look sometimes like I'm some frail little child about to drop dead at any moment!
no subject
He glances away, muttering like a surly child.]
I'm not... Looking at you like that. [Is he...?] I'm just...
[He's just. Worried. And he's SO bothered that Yzak thinks he'd ever look at him that way, or think he was frail, or incapable, he doesn't even know what to say at first. How could he EVER, given everything they've been through? Given what their JOBS are? It's not that Yzak is weak. It's that Yzak is something precious to Dearka that sometimes, lately, he can't look at without remembering that SOMETHING out there might be trying to take him away.
And it can attack at any time, without warning. Faster than even a Coordinator can react.
And that scares the fuck out of him.]
no subject
[ Yzak looks down when Dearka breaks his gaze. He knows that the two of them are both right and wrong here. He can't blame Dearka for his concern, as much as it irritates and worries him that his partner is letting it get to him this badly. Such is the complicated way of human emotions, magnified in stressful times like these.
And despite his short temper and foul mood, even Yzak knows that he needs to blunt his tongue a bit before he says something truly hurtful over something so ... ugh.
He sighs, shoulders slumping. ]
I know. I get it. You're scared because this shit has happened before. And neither of us want a repeat of it.
[ Or at the very least, Yzak could do without the torture part if he had no choice in the matter otherwise. But everything about Brasov made them both feel so powerless that when faced with anything similar, neither of them can help but refuse to feel that way again. ]
It's the same for me.
[ He looks back up to Dearka's face, his hurt expression, and it pains Yzak to see him like that. As much as he wants Dearka to BE this sort of honest with him, he still prefers when there's nothing too dire to get worked up over in the first place.
He takes a couple of steps toward him, chin dipping to try to recapture his gaze. ]
What's also the same, though, is the intention to do every god damned thing I can to stay on this side of things so we reach a solution faster. You refuse to let something terrible happen to me without doing whatever you can to avoid it? So do I! I wouldn't dare let anything take me out before we could get back home! So no matter what happens or doesn't happen or happens four months from now, let at least that fact assure you.
[ Because of course, Yzak would say something like that is a fact, no matter how much logic dictates differently. That's how determined he is to see home again. For both of them to. ]
no subject
Alright, alright. I know...
[He turns to face him again properly, stepping closer. Reaching both hands out to take Yzak's and squeezing them lightly.]
I'll... Try a little harder to be less tragic about it, okay?
[He still sounds a BIT surly, but. That's just how Dearka be.
A small huff, and his expression sharpens again.]
...But if we're on the same page, then you've GOT to stop acting like I'm treating you like an invalid when I insist on coming with you places! And yeah, that does include going to get a bunch of stupid wire that's stashed less than five minutes away. Don't you try and tell me it's not a big deal, okay? Or did you already forget about the thing where Doc disappeared while he was just walking down a damn hallway by himself?
no subject
[ That's not even some kind of digging remark or a demand to put in more effort. It's a compliment because it's true and Yzak knows Dearka's potential is as limitless as his own. That's why he likes him, after all. And why he's bestowed with Yzak's affections.
There's a brief moment where his expressions twists a little, like he's ready to harp on things again ... but it's a kneejerk thing caused by his stupid clown ass short temper, so it drops just as quickly. ]
And ... fine. Okay.
[ He sounds a little reluctant, but in that way where he knows what Dearka says is honest, and he can't argue against that honesty, Yzak's bruised ego aside. And when he thinks about it ... Lucy's pain and Aventurine's pain from losing Godzilla and Ratio are the same. But at least in Lucy's case ... she has the tiny sliver of comfort to have actually seen what happened, instead of like Brasov. Sure, they all but confirmed that Ratio disappeared the same way, but the fact that it wasn't witnessed by Aventurine, that maybe something might have gone differently if it was...
Dearka doesn't want nor deserve that. Not again.
He looks down at their hands, and ... on the aforementioned subject of why Yzak likes him, he circles back to what Dearka said earlier, peering back up at him with a small scowl on his lips as one of those taken hands frees itself to jab a finger into his chest. ]
What the hell was that, earlier?! About how good you are as a partner?!
no subject
He laughs and flashes Yzak one of his more charming grins, holding up his freed hand in a placating gesture.]
What?! I always want to do my best for you, is that so wrong?
[He's downplaying and deflecting from the true seriousness of that statement a bit, because he doesn't want to get back into the mushy/vulnerable territory again so soon. Not after it feels like they JUST finished sorting some of this shit out, finally.]
no subject
[ Because guess what, bozo, SAME.
He isn't sure if he likes seeing Dearka grin at him like this in this context, so the intended disarming falls a bit flat. ]
But your worth as my partner [ Partner. ] isn't measured by one thing! Especially that!
[ The tip of his finger nudgepokes against his chest for emphasis. ]
no subject
Alright, yeah. I know. You can appreciate why I'm kind of hung up on it though, right? Not that my reputation as your adjutant is even close to the most important thing here or anything, but...
[You know. It's not. NOT important. He puts up with a lot of shit! Both here AND at home. People thinking he's incompetent or stupid, untrustworthy, etc... Yzak gets badly fucked up TWICE on his watch, and he's gonna start wondering if maybe they're right about him.]
no subject
Sure. But reputation be damned, nothing would ever make me question if asking you to stay with me was the right call or not.
[ Yzak tips his chin up. Never mind about that bruised ego from a moment ago. It's back already and stronger than ever. ] And my opinion there is all that truly matters! I don't make decisions like that easily!
[ He says that, and becomes that much more aware of how warm Dearka's hand feels, his own fingers curling to squeeze it back now. He looks down at their hand, and tries not to let the tone of his voice drop off as it does when he starts to have feelings, but ... he's not very good at it. ]
So I know I didn't make the wrong one, with you.
[ He clearly isn't only talking about the adjutant thing. ]
no subject
For a second, Dearka blinks with owlish surprise. Then he squeezes Yzak's hand back. Pulls him in close with his other arm. Briefly rocks onto tip-toes so that he can more easily peck Yzak on top of his fussy, bossy little head. Lingers there a moment, murmuring into his silky silver hair.]
I love you.
[Idiot.]
1/3
It's as though he can't breathe in that moment, eyes wide as he goes tense against Dearka. The soft tickle of his lips against his hair lingers just as that phrase does, and his heart feels like it's going to fucking explode with how fast it suddenly starts to beat. ]
no subject
And yet, from that moment when he decided to throw caution and obligation to the wind and kiss Dearka for the first time, he knew.
He's known all this time, somewhere deep down, hasn't he?
That he loves him, too.
Even when he said he couldn't promise anything. Even when he didn't allow himself to put stock into any sort of 'later' once they were finished here.
And more than his own feelings, what Yzak has always wanted more than anything is for someone to love him with the intensity and dedication that he was always ready to give. He used to wonder why it never manifested, why instead he skirted blind dates and set-ups by his mother ... but now he knows. It's because he could never fathom forming anything near the same sort of deep, special connection he and Dearka have always shared. A bond that's been stretched, but never broken, both of them being whatever they need to be for one another. Whether it's an anchor to keep their partner grounded, or a lifevest when one of them feels like they're drowning.
Since the moment Yzak decided to take that leap, his affection has only grown into a love that he recognizes in Dearka like a mirror of his own when he hears it. All this time, more and more, he's been falling- ]
no subject
It happens in the span of about two seconds: the air suddenly gets heavy, the lights in the room flicker and spark. Both Yzak and Dearka will feel a wave of nausea hit them and a pounding in their heads so powerful it seems to make Yzak stumble. But what really causes that is a rift, dark and pulsing, opening up right under his feet. A black tendril of energy snaps up and coils under one of his arms, up around his neck, and it pulls.
By the time Yzak can let out a loud, cursing cry of protest, he's already being dragged in. The hand holding Dearka's grips so hard that it feels like it could shatter a bone. ]
no subject
00:00:221. A hot fraction of a second where Dearka almost wonders if maybe the nausea that suddenly hits him is from anxiety over having blurted out such an important thing with absolutely ZERO percent irony OR deflective goofiness. Like, is he having some kind of panic attack or something, just because he told his boyfriend with full unabashed sincerity that he loves him? That shocked expression on Yzak's face: what does that mean?
00:00:457. The lights flicker. Alarm bells start ringing faintly in the back of Dearka's head. Why? It's pinging something familiar, something he's been reviewing a lot lately—
00:00:785. Ratio. The lights, just before he disappeared, flickered just like this, he saw it on the surveillance tapes over and over—
00:01:000. Dearka's eyes flit back to meet Yzak's again, wide with dawning horror.
00:01:010. He registers the squeeze of Yzak's hand on his, vice-like, yanking, down—
He doesn't waste time voicing his protest. Pulled into a low stoop, bent at the waist, his own hand squeezing back on Yzak's just as tightly. TWO hands, then, his second clapping around Yzak's forearm as well, doubling his grip. He plants one foot back, strengthening his stance, teeth bared in an ugly, determined grimace. No. No, he won't fucking let him—!
00:00:990 remaining... Give or take a few tenths. He COULD do this for as long as it takes... But we all know he won't get the time.]
no subject
He knows he's not getting out of this.
Though his face is contorted with anger, determination, pain, he manages to look Dearka straight in the eye, sharp and clear as anything. ]
... Dearka ... don't—
[ He doesn't get to finish whatever it was he was going to say. The rift surges, and with a quick, final, effortless motion, it drags Yzak in completely. The thing is, he's still holding fast to Dearka's arm when it snaps closed after him.
Yzak is among the missing, now.
And those who go to check will find that the Duel Blitz is gone, too. ]
(FIN) cw: amputation
Well. Dearka doesn't get to find out, actually, if that's what Yzak was going to tell him or not. Maybe now he'll never know! He does keep holding on to the very last, putting every ounce of his strength into keeping Yzak up and on this side of reality--
In a way, it's a good thing that the rift pulls as hard as it does at the end. The force pulls him off balance, necessitates him to fling an arm out behind to keep from falling in as well. They're quickly losing ground. This is a moment of desperation. Thank god that with ocular technology, it only takes a thought for him to pull up the group chat, type out "SOS Yzak's room help", and hit send.
None of them will get here in time, though. It's already too late. Dearka bellows something distraught as he watches his best friend, his leader, the man he loves, disappears into the void. He watches the closing rift appear to rush up towards him as he's pulled down to the floor, chest catching, his arm still deep beyond the threshold. He's sure he must be holding onto Yzak still, he hasn't let go, but also he can't feel...
...Anything...?
It was a good thing that the rift pulled as hard as it did! Because. If it hadn't? He'd have kept holding on the way he did before. With both hands. And then he might've wound up being down two arms.]
