DOWNTIME MINGLE #8

DOWNTIME MINGLE #8

CONTENT WARNINGS: disease, epidemics, COVID-like illness, lockdowns

โ–ถ 001. WINNER'S CIRCLE

In light of everyone's recent help with both the ocean exploration and the clinical trials, the Outsiders will return one day to a surprisingly well-decorated area within the mess hall at the Kyoto base. It's been adorned with some of the flowers that have wildly bloomed on the outskirts of the city in various areas, as well as those that the researchers had been personally working on fostering in the LILITH greenhouses. Beneath it will be not a pizza party for once, and charcuterie and other donated food items will be there for Outsiders to enjoy. There is even some recognizable cuisine from Egypt for them as well!
GOOD JOB:
FORGERY (K.O.)
AKATSUKI (600)
BANKERBOY (600)
Thanks to the Outsidersโ€™ hard work, they are met with positive reception by the general public, which seems to have grown astronomically since the past two missions. This has only grown from their recent success abroad. Per usual, there are a few oddities that have caught on in the city.

While Neo Tokyo has always been noted as being a city of technology (even with their dwindling resources), a new trend of collecting swords has sparked in the city. Maybe they've seen it in certain Outsiders, but the idea of both collecting swords, displaying them, or even holding exhibitions for them have become more common. Some have even taken to hunting for them in the wild.

If any Outsiders are interested, there appears to be several posts online in which they think older blades may be laying in sleep. But, as with most rumors, there's no guarantee it isn't a wild goose chase.

On TV, the new spring line up is out. A new live action series featuring a group of friends who fight kaiju using mecha has made its debut. Their mecha are animal themed and can combine to create a super mecha. The new lead is a hot headed female character with a lion mecha, which spawns a line of action figures in stores across the city. The lion mecha is the most popular and often resold online for inflated prices. Maybe an Outsider can get their hands on one without paying the scalping fee?

Oftentimes when it comes to the Outsiders and the general masses, there's a distinct disconnect. Which is why it all seems to hinge on rumors and hearsay. Who knows where the information stems from, but they heard a certain Outsider has a liking for bread. There will be no shortage of bread sponsorships for the base, though... some may be far more experimental. However, some claim lab-grown bread may actually be tastier? Only one way to put it to the test. The lab-grown bread conveniently also comes in cans.

โ–ถ 002. FROM SUMER WITH LOVE.

Around the same time, a few LILITH employees show signs of a common cold โ€“ nothing noteworthy at first really, if only out-of-season. But then the disease starts spreading at an alarming rate within the headquarters, its symptoms evolving from a mere cold to a severe life-threatening flu. Preliminary analysis reveals the disease to be unlike any known on this planet โ€“ perhaps this is why no medicines work. Symptoms include chest pain, trouble breathing, nausea, excessive vomiting and diarrhea, chills and high fever.

To make matters worse, news from LILITH locations around the world reveal all known bases to be afflicted by the same mysterious epidemic, only affecting LILITH staff and not Outsiders at this time. This cannot be a coincidence: LILITH is under attack.. but how is something like this possible?

As researchers race to try and understand the disease, LILITH will request everyone to quarantine themselves on base for the safety of the public. Gradually, the disease spreads across the base only for tests to reveal: the Outsiders are left unaffected.

As the month progresses, more and more of LILITHโ€™s employees find themselves bedridden with the deadly disease until by the 30th of May, only Outsiders are left standing and healthy; all the LILITH crew has been affected. The civilian population outside the base is safe for now, but for how long? Unless something is done, it is estimated all humans working for LILITH will be dead by late June.

"Greetings, my children. Worry not. I come here to report some concerning news: both Captain Yamakawa and Commander Shiro have fallen gravely ill. Since I am an A.I assistant, my health is optimal. Seok Dang has also fallen ill, though he is still in denial of it. I will do my best to take care of each and every one ofโ€” "

"BULLSHIT!! This is nothing! I've had hangovers worse than this, you hear me? Calm your terabyte-tits, bitch. I'm here. There ain't nothin' that is gonna stop me, in fact, with the higher ups feelin' like shit, that would put me in command, right? W-Wait, hold that thought, I.. feel like I'm gonna throw up."

Seok Dang tried to stay on the line, but all that was heard was gut-wretching vomiting, to which SYNTHIA promptly cuts his connection. Sorry about that.

It is up to the Outsiders to find the source of the disease and resolve the crisis before all hope is lost. Is this somehow related to those Outsiders who recently disappeared? Wait, arenโ€™t there a few Outsiders here who have seen this flu before and can recognize itโ€ฆ?

โ–ถ 003. LIVIN' LA VIDA LOCKDOWN.

While everyone is quarantined on base, they are encouraged to communicate with each other through the network. During this time, they can do research, share ideas, and try to figure out what is happening as the disease spreads across base and around the world.

While they are in lock down, LILITH encourages the Outsiders to pick up some new hobbies and interests to keep themselves active. They will have access to various workout videos. Some of the videos are hosted by cyborg coaches that expect Outsiders to do things with their bodies that probably aren't physically possible. Other Outsiders might get simple ovens and jars of suspicious "starters" to bake. Of course, there are other hobbies like growing miniature artificial plants, board games, virtual reality games, and more to keep them interested while they're trapped inside!

After about a week, when it becomes obvious the Outsiders are unaffected, they will be allowed to leave their rooms and roam freely to assist. LILITH does not understand why they are not affected but they are depending on the Outsiders for help now more than ever.

Though they are free to wander and seem to be immune for the time being, LILITH warns if they experience any cold-like symptoms, they should report their status and quarantine immediately.

โ–ถ 004. AFTERWORD + SPECIAL NOTE.

Welcome to May's downtime mingle! All tags on this log are worth 2 points.

The June Event is a player plot that is going to differ from regular events in a few ways: Outsiders have to find the location for the next Kaiju fight on their own using hints given in the From Sumer With Love prompt, and correlating them with the past and ongoing disappearance of various Outsiders. They can use LILITHโ€™s equipment to look for anomalies across the globe, however there is not enough time to scan or contact every region in the world. Outsiders need to guess where the anomaly likely is before they can get confirmation. There is a PLOTTING post for this event over here.

Furthermore, they will have to reach this destination through their own means as there is no LILITH staff left to fly them there. Vehicles can be requisitioned, but will have to be flown by Outsiders on their own. This also means Outsiders are free to stay behind at the base if they prefer, as nobody will force them to go. Pain-relieving medicines can also be developed if the true nature of the disease is found and the appropriate characters work on it, though nothing short of defeating the anomaly will solve this crisis and save everyone.

Last but not least: this event will have two Kaiju battles, one on each log as well as many different challenges the Outsiders will have to solve on their own if they want to save LILITH and bring home their missing friends! Please use this thread to ask questions and offer your proposals as to what the Outsiders should do (location guessing, transport, etc). Proposals made in this thread will affect the first and second prompts of the first log.

EVENT BREAKDOWN/RECAP (CLICK TO EXPAND)
1. WINNER'S CIRCLE: The heavy hitters/KO winners of the last kaiju fight receive their sponsorships and inspire new trends, including an interest in collecting swords, a new live action series (like Power Rangers), and free bread.

2. FROM SUMER WITH LOVE: A mysterious disease spreads across LILITH's bases. The symptoms are like the common cold/flu but much more severe. There is currently no cure. Outsiders seem to be immune to the disease. After quarantining, they are encouraged to investigate and come up with plans for the battle to come.

3. LIVIN' LA VIDA LOCKDOWN: While on lockdown, Outsiders are encouraged to try some new hobbies. They can also communicate through the network and do research to uncover additional clues and come up with more plans.

Can't argue with you there. The whole point of someone being a hero is being someone you can count on. I think. [Since they don't exactly have heroes in the formal sense back home. That's why he tries to be as reliable as possible when it comes to slaying ayakashi - to keep people safe.

Thankfully even if he did end up soloing for a while, Yato's used to working (mostly) alone save for having a shinki as a partner. So if he gets teamed up with a stranger, it shouldn't be too different for him, although he would definitely prefer being alongside Katsuki and Denji if given the choice. So long as he gets to go home to Hiyori at night, he'll be content with whatever assignments they give him.

Since one thing he likes to do is have dinner ready for her, whether it's something simple like fish and rice or more elaborate as a treat.

Once he gets the hang of the work, he'll probably settle in quite nicely, provided they don't put him on desk duty for long periods. That might have him climbing the walls on top of being a waste of his combat skills.]

Hehe, okay. [It's an appealing little restaurant, even if it can barely be called such. A few seats is all one needs when getting soba, after all.] A month, maybe two? Not very long... But I've tried a lot of things! I started off as a private investigator, then tried manicurist, pet photographer, shoe salesman, and restaurant reviewer.

A hero wins and saves. [A hero who can't reliably do both... what the hell are they even doing? Even if other worlds don't have heroes like Katsuki's world, people put a lot of emphasis on being reliable. To do your job, to keep your world, to stay safe. Yato would know the importance of that well, given his work on protecting humans.

Sometimes Katsuki and Denji have to work with others. They're not strangers anymore, considering they've been working on the police force for over a year now, bare the occasional newbie signing on. Yato will pick up and befriend a lot of them if he starts working there, so he won't be the outlier for long. He's a lot friendlier than Katsuki, that's for sure. But odds are they'll work together on missions needing more power.

And no, they're not gonna put him on a desk job. Though the officers do have to fill out some paperwork after a case for records. Since they were the eye-witnesses most of the time.]

Why'd you leave? [He knows the answer, mostly, but wants Yato to confront his own preferences in preface to thinking about taking a job he's gonna be expected to serve at least half a year on. Katsuki opens the door and heads inside.]

I guess that makes sense. A hero who constantly loses wouldn't be able to save many people, I imagine. [Even if they struggle to come out on top, they have to protect the people and catch the bad guy in order to be successful. In a way, he's not unlike Katsuki's heroes in his world, being a protector of humanity and all.

If working with others is anything like their undercover mission he joined in on a while back, then he's got no qualms about having teammates and partners helping out. Or being the one helping. Either or is good to him. He just needs a place to belong where he can aid others and be allowed to roam on occasion.

No desk work though! Yay! Reports aren't such a bad thing, although he'll have to make sure not to get too poetic in his descriptions of what happened. He's a bit artsy like that.]

Restlessness, mostly. When I slay ayakashi, things are always unpredictable and vary from day to day. So having the same thing happening for months on end... it just doesn't suit me. [Which is why he's hopeful that being on the police force will grant him both security and the freedom to patrol the city itself.]

No shit. [Someone who can't fight to protect or save doesn't have any business trying to play the hero. They'll only get in the way of people who are trying to do their proper job. Failure heroes. Despite his criticisms of Yato, he's never once thought the guy wasn't a hero. In his own rights. Not the same sort of hero as the ones in Katsuki's world, but close enough.

Yato might find he's paired up with people he's come to like. Katsuki usually prefers to work alone or with Denji, though he has a few people on the force he doesn't mind working with compared to others. Yato will probably have similar in time. Once he gets his feet settled in.

Phhht, Katsuki would be both amused and pissed if he had to sit through on of Yato's flowery reports. Denji complains about his paperwork at ties, and Katsuki'd be lying if he said he didn't sometimes do his boyfriend's reports. He'll do any they're both teamed up on. They're usually not too long. An hour at max, and that's rare.]

Hmph. Some weeks can be boring as fuck. Others are hectic. [The life of a police man is pretty unpredictable. But given the nature of the city and the derelict state of the outskirts, Yato will probably have plenty to deal with. Along with free time to explore and wander in his new job.]

[That's something they both can agree on at least. There's no shame in not being up to the task of saving people, or even fighting in general. It's not something everyone can do. That's what heroes and gods are for in the first place. And he'd be proud to be considered a hero of any caliber by Katsuki.

At least Katsuki would never be bored reading one of Yato's reports! Annoyed as hell for it being so long and florid, maybe, but not bored. Probably. As long as they get the details of events down right, it probably matters less who does the reports. A well-written one by Katsuki is likely better than an impatiently scrawled one from Denji.]

Yeah, I can imagine. It's like that with ayakashi, too. There'll be peaceful stretches, then suddenly it seems like they all act up at once. Which they kinda do. [More and more he's liking the sound of becoming a member of the force. It's not too unfamiliar, yet it'll let him learn new things, meet new people, and help the citizens without there needing to be a kaiju to beat.]

[There are heroes who prefer to stick to smaller neighborhood areas, but every hero has to be trained in rescue, combat, evacuation, and the like. If a hero isn't up to the task of saving people, they're not gonna be a hero in Katsuki's world. Better to work in construction or clean up than fool yourself into being a hero who can't hero. In Katsuki's world, Yato could definitely be a hero.

There are some things he'd rather be bored at than deal with. As if he'd actually read through the entire thing. Probably storm into Yato's office or to his desk, throw it right in his face, and shout at him to shorten his words! They don't need to know how many buttons are on the guy's shirt or what the history of this road is! Unless it's relevant to the case. But if he has that good an eye for detail, odds are Yato's gonna work some with the detectives and forensics as well.]

Aa. Criminals can't fucking schedule themselves. [Like it's the bad guys' faults. It is and Katsuki will always blame them for making other people's lives harder, no matter what their shitty reasons are!]

[Nothing wrong with being a small time hero. Even just keeping your own neighborhood safe means that those who cover a wider area will have one less thing to worry about. It's the same for gods, with each patrolling particular areas, usually those surrounding their shrines and temples. Only during the Great Purification at the beginning of the year do the gods all get together and plan a massive cleansing of ayakashi.

After a few visits like that, Yato would finally get the hint and stick to vital details, saving the more colorful reports for Hiyori back home. Though should any bad guys ever escape, such minor things might actually come in handy. Hopefully that won't happen too often, though. He wants a clean track record!]

That'd be pretty funny if they did. Take turns and come in waves like the kaiju. That's one thing I'm grateful for - us usually getting a break between them. [Too bad people aren't so predictable. Although it's also good they're not highly organized, otherwise there'd be even more trouble.]
blastedass: by bokunoicons @ tumblr (๐Ÿ’ฅ This is his version of decent.)

[personal profile] blastedass 2025-06-02 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[No, but even small time heroes have the same training and focus as big time heroes. Fighting criminals, intervening in traffic incidents, locating lost pets, even delivering things. Each action a hero does is designed to help people. Someone who doesn't want to do that can't be a hero. The shittiest part of heroics-- both human heroes and gods --is their reactive nature. They can't "do" much unless something bad happens. It'd be an amazing world which didn't need heroics.

Watch Hiyori end up taking notes as Yato regales her with his exploits during the day. Maybe she'll be able to parse out the purple prose and get to the true heart of the matter. This is her fiance after all. Katsuki isn't gonna criticize Yato for having a sharp eye and gather details. But not all of it belongs on a summary report. He's free to detail everything on a long form report afterwards. Unfortunately on his "own time" but some people like doing that?]

Aa. Those bastards show up like clockwork each time. [Which makes not being able to counter them even worse, considering they should know when to expect them. Thankfully their efforts in Egypt proved they could preemptively locate and strike the kaiju, though it was already influencing people from afar... Still, step in the right direction.]
